C-factor Configuration factor. Ratio Radius : Height (R/H) of the space between two circular (R) parallel and solid surfaces. The height is the distance between the surfaces. This parameter gives the ratio of the fixed area of the solid surface (p*R2*2) and the free area at the circumference (2*p*R*H).
CFA Contact free area (Lambrechts et al., 1987). Those parts of occlusal surfaces which never come into contact with an antagonist.
ISO International Standards Organization.
OCA Occlusal contact area (Lambrechts et al., 1987). Those parts of occlusal surfaces which frequently come into contact with the antagonist.
PMMA together with MMA is a two component resin material, coming as a powder (PMMA) and a liquid (MMA). The powder consists of spherical particles (beads). Many years ago, in preliminary experiments with the Acta Wear Machine some of this powder was added to the slurry, to facilitate the generation of a separating film between the wheels.
POD (Pin-On-Disc) Standardized wear test apparatus, consisting of a pin of test-material 1, pressed against a rotating disc of test-material 2.
SEM Scanning electron microscope. Device to create a magnified image of an electrically (made) conducting surface with an electron beam. Much higher magnifications than with a normal light microscope are possible without loss of picture quality because of the much smaller size of the electron as compared to the photons of visible light.
SI Standard International. Adjective to units which are recognized by the ISO.
