On September 3^rd Prof. dr. Carel Davidson has been distinguished as Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion.

Professor Davidson, zo'n 35 jaar verbonden aan de UvA, spande zich als fysicus in voor het belang van de materiaalkunde, voor de beroepsuitoefening van tandartsen in opleiding en postacademische opleiding, in binnen- en buitenland. Omdat hij daarbij de toepasbaarheid van de kennis voor de tandarts nooit uit het oog verloor, wordt hij wel gezien als de meest klinisch georiënteerde tandheelkundige hoogleraar en droeg hij in belangrijke mate bij aan de internationale bekendheid van het Academisch Centrum Tandheelkunde Amsterdam. Hij legde al vroeg veel contacten met de tandheelkundige industrie, wat later van grote waarde bleek voor het stimuleren van derdegeldstroomonderzoek. Davidson ontving diverse internationale prijzen op het gebied van de tandheelkunde. Daarnaast zette hij zich vele jaren in op het gebied van kunst en de joodse cultuur. 

Prof. Dr. Carel L. Davidson studied physics, chemistry and mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. After his graduation, he worked for some time in the aircraft and aerospace industry. 

Since 1966 he got a tenure position at the Dental School of the University of Amsterdam. Since 1969 until 2000 he was chairman of the Department of Dental Materials Science. 

Under his responsibility, 20 PhD theses were completed. He is author or co-author of 7 textbooks and about 400 publications in national and international journals. He fulfills and fulfilled guest-professorships at various Universities abroad. 

Within the wide spectrum of subjects that are being investigated at his laboratories, restorative dentistry with adhesive materials got his main interest. 

At present, he has a position as guest professor at ACTA and teaches worldwide on materials scientific aspects of successful dentistry. 
In 2000 he has been awarded by the IADR with the Wilmer Souder Award and by the FDI with the silver medal of the city of Paris.
